The Hair Type Guide

1A

Fine and naturally straight with no hint of curl or wave. It is soft and carries a significant sheen.

Challenges:

Lacks volume and is prone to oil buildup from the scalp.

Active Care:

Focused on clarifying and lightweight volumizing products.

1B

Straight hair with medium texture and more body than 1A, making it easier to hold a style.

Challenges:

Can lose its bounce easily if weighted down by products.

Active Care:

Gentle cleansing and very light moisture on lengths only.

1C

Thick, coarse straight hair that is resistant to curls and can have a slight, barely visible bend.

Challenges:

Prone to frizz and can feel heavy or unmanageable.

Active Care:

Smoothing serums and moisture-rich cleansing to maintain softness.

2A

Fine, thin wavy hair that has a loose 'S' pattern and is relatively easy to straighten.

Challenges:

Lacks definition and can appear limp without proper support.

Active Care:

Lightweight mousses for definition without sacrifice of volume.

2B

Medium-textured waves that are flatter at the crown and more defined from the mid-lengths.

Challenges:

Prone to mid-length frizz and tangling during active play.

Active Care:

Salt-free definition creams and moisture-locking sprays.

2C

Thick waves that frequently start near the root. The pattern is distinct and borders on curly.

Challenges:

High vulnerability to frizz and knots in humid environments.

Active Care:

Anti-frizz treatments and deep-conditioning masks once a week.

3A

Large, bouncy curls with a clear 'S' shape. The diameter is roughly that of sidewalk chalk.

Challenges:

Prone to losing definition and becoming reactive to climate.

Active Care:

Curl-refreshing sprays and breathable, light curl enhancers.

3B

Springy, voluminous curls with more density. The diameter is similar to a large marker.

Challenges:

Consistent dryness as natural oils have a harder path to travel.

Active Care:

Milky leave-ins and sulfate-free hydrating cleansers.

3C

Tight corkscrew curls, often called 'coily-curly,' with the circumference of a pencil.

Challenges:

Significant shrinkage and a fast tendency to lose moisture.

Active Care:

Layering moisture through the LOC method for lasting hydration.

4A

Dense, wiry coils with a visible 'S' pattern when stretched. High density and fragile.

Challenges:

Moisture retention is difficult; hair can feel rough to the touch.

Active Care:

Rich leave-in creams and scalp-stimulating essential oils.

4B

Z-shaped coils that follow sharp angles rather than curves. Very high shrinkage levels.

Challenges:

Extremely fragile and highly prone to breakage during styling.

Active Care:

Heavy moisture-sealing butters and protective style maintenance.

4C

The tightest coil pattern with very little defined shape without specific styling help.

Challenges:

Maximum shrinkage and prone to severe tangling and dryness.

Active Care:

Intensive deep conditioning and absolute protection of ends.

Porosity & Density Explained

Porosity is your hair’s ability to absorb and retain moisture, governed by the cuticle layer. Knowing your hair's porosity is the ultimate performance marker, allowing you to layer products with precision for an active lifestyle without heavy buildup.

Low Porosity

What it is: Cuticles are tightly closed, resisting water entry. Once moisture is in, it stays, but getting it there requires intent and patience.

Medium Porosity

What it is: The cuticles are slightly raised, striking the perfect balance. Moisture is absorbed easily and retained efficiently with minimal effort.

High Porosity

What it is: Cuticles are widely spaced or raised, allowing moisture to rush in but escape just as quickly. Hair often feels dry or frizzy soon after styled.
